Project AWARE Update February 2013

CITES4SHARKS Here We Come!

In a matter of days, officials from countries around the world will have a historic opportunity to protect a record number of sharks and rays – including oceanic whitetip sharks, hammerheads and manta rays. Project AWARE will be on the ground during the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 3 – 14 March. We’ll represent the voice of divers worldwide and ensure the world’s most vulnerable sharks and rays have a voice too.

More than 150,000 of your have stood by sharks on the CITES campaign trail since 2010 – signing petitions, making donations and rallying local communities. Now is the time to amplify our global call. Sharks can’t afford to wait for another shot at this.

Passionate shark lovers are sending a loud message to CITES leaders - “Vote ‘Yes’ for sharks and rays!”. You can help spread the word. Download the “Extinction is NOT an Option” sign, take a picture and post it to our Facebook wall of support.

This week, we asked Ania Budziak, Associate Director of Science and Policy and Project AWARE staffer on the front lines of our program work, to answer some top CITES-related questions. She’ll be on the ground pushing for much needed protections for sharks and rays this March

This Trilaminate dry suit combines flexibility, strength and light weight!
Equipped with the zip seal on the front so that the diver can easily open and close their own suit.

It features a relaxed fit so you can use all kinds of under clothing including very thick to dive in very cold water.

Booties vulcanized and reinforced with non-slip materials

Pete got his drysuit finally in December 2012 and is very happy with the suit, its easy to get in and out of as well as keeping him very toasty as he enjoys pointing out to the other divers out with him!

Dive Site Review

Las Eras

This fantastic shore diving site is suitable for divers open water and above as this site has many levels so you can adjust the depth of the dive to the certification levels of the divers.

We enter the water to the left hand side of the bay and swim out to the edge of the marina wall, at his point we descend into about 6 meters of water, we follow around the marina wall to the left hand side, where you will be able to see large rock formations over hangs and plenty of aquatic life.

I am never disappointed when I visit this site whether I see a Moray, Octopus, Common ray or just Large shoals of fish there are the largest Trumpet fish that live at this site that I have ever had the pleasure to see, its always amazing to see the amount of life.
Living amongst the rocks you are likely to find Anemones, Red Back Cleaner Shrimp, Black and Brown Moray Eels as well as Starfish Cardinal fish and fire worms. An amazing site that is a must see.
