More Diving Awards and we are so pleased :)

Newsletter April 2013

Another lovely month here is Tenerife we have had some fabulous calm seas (well once the storm went!!) and the sun has been shining.  We have also been to a new dive site in the north of the island Punta Teno which is where the north meets the south.  This was a fabulous dive site and we saw a very large Black Sting Ray, truly amazing.

You can almost feel the summer arriving! Easter is all set to be a busy period.

Even more fantastic news for us here at Dive and Sea Tenerife as we were accepted into the PADI Green star award.  We are the only Dive Centre in the whole of the canaries to be both 100% Project AWARE and have the PADI Green Star Award.

Emelyne and Gary have both been doing really well and are  working hard on completing  their Advanced Open Water Diver Course as well as having lots of fun diving.

It was great to welcome Peter back to the dive centre but this time joining us as a Divemaster Intern.  Peter joins us as an Open Water diver with only 8 dives.  This week he will start his Advanced Open Water Diver Course and Brian and Gary will complete their final dive Navigation.

At the end of the month we are looking forward to welcoming Sebastien who is from Belgium who is joining the internship as a non diver.  We are all looking forward to meeting him and seeing his progress all the way to Divemaster.

Things Every Diver should have

Own mask, having a comfortable mask is such an important part of your dive if you have a mask that leaks through out the dive this will impair your enjoyment of the dive.

There is a massive selection of masks available with an array of wonderful colours to choose from HOWEVER don’t be side tracked by your favourite colours the most important part is that the mask fits you properly!

So How to tell if a Mask actually fits you properly

  1. Place the mask on your face and look upwards with the strap loose infront of your face.  The mask skirt should rest evenly against your face the whole way round.
  2. Inhale slightly through your nose, the mask should pull snugly into place and stay well enough that you can turn or shake your head without is coming loose.
 Some popular masks are

Aqualung Favola                Mares X Vision           Subgear Sprite       Aqualung Teknika
49.98 Euros                      42 Euros                    45 Euros                49.50 Euros

Dive Site Review

El Delfin

Dive and Sea Tenerife diving at El Delfin

This site is one of our newest sites, every diver we take to this site has had a fantastic dive, so its become a favourite of ours.

We named the site El Delfin because at 40 meters a small statue of a dolphin can be found.  This site is suitable for Advanced divers and above and is located approximately 5 or 6 minutes outside of the Marina.

We descend from the boat into around 20 meters of water and head over to the rocky outcrop. We move around the different levels of the large rock formation searching for the hidden gems.

When we have visited this site we have come across, Rays, Canarian Lobster, Fangtooth Moray Eels, as well as Lots of Large Bream, Trumpet fish and a selection of amazing anemones.

Thank you for your continuing support in 2013, it has been really great to meet all the new divers in February, as well as great to see familiar faces back again.

February has been another busy month here at Dive and Sea Tenerife, and the weather has been kind to us with calm seas and warm….ish water!!!

At the beginning of March we welcomed Emelyne from France to join us on her PADI Divemaster 8 week Internship.  Emelyne is an open water diver, but hadn’t dived for a few years so she started off on her induction day with Instructor Alice for a Scuba Tune Up.  She has now moved on to her PADI Advanced Open Water Course.

Next month we are looking forward to welcoming Peter, a repeat customer of ours who has decided to come and join us for our 8 week Internship.

March Special Offers

·         Free PADI Training Logbook with any PADI Scuba Diver or PADI Open Water Diver Course
·         Free Project Aware Dive with Project Aware Speciality 110 Euros
·         Half price for second diver on all dive packs

Items every diver needs

Dive Computer

Why should I have my own Dive Computer?

The reason all divers should own their own dive computer is so that they know they are diving within their dive limits for depth and decompression time, it is also a great tool for use for your logbook,

On the market there is a great variety of choice available from under 200 Euros up to 1000 Euros.

A couple of tips for when you are choosing a dive computer!!

Buttons- Are the buttons easy to use even with dive gloves on?
Display Visibility- Can you read the display even in a low light situation. Are the numbers big enough? Does the background light up if needed?
The more information you want to see, the smaller it will need to be to fit on the screen.

Dive Equipment  Review

Suntoo Zoop

Dive and Sea Tenerife Equipment Sales

An easy to use relatively inexpensive dive computer, at 199 Euros

The sunto zoop , is distinctive in colour as it is orange so easily seen underwater.

The Zoop can be used with Air or Nitrox and is also available to be mounted into a console.  There is an optional interface for detailed graphical logbooks and data analysis.

This dive computer is a favourite of divers due to its easy operation system and clear large LCD screen.

Dive Site Review

Starfish Bay

Dive and Sea Tenerife Purple StarfishDive and Sea Tenerife Diving at Starfish BayDive and Sea Tenerife Common Octopus

This site is a great boat dive and suitable for all certification levels, we descend into 12 meters of wate and head towards the coats line, where you can search amongst all the rocks looking for hidden Aquatic life.

So called due to the large number of different species of starfish that can be found at this site, there is however a variety of aquatic life to be found.

Normally on this dive you will find Moray Eels, Octopus, Cuttlefish and depending on the season some Angel sharks that are sleeping in the sand.

This site is a great dive for Project AWARE days when we are culling the Urchins.

Project AWARE Update February 2013

CITES4SHARKS Here We Come!

In a matter of days, officials from countries around the world will have a historic opportunity to protect a record number of sharks and rays – including oceanic whitetip sharks, hammerheads and manta rays. Project AWARE will be on the ground during the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 3 – 14 March. We’ll represent the voice of divers worldwide and ensure the world’s most vulnerable sharks and rays have a voice too.

More than 150,000 of your have stood by sharks on the CITES campaign trail since 2010 – signing petitions, making donations and rallying local communities. Now is the time to amplify our global call. Sharks can’t afford to wait for another shot at this.

Passionate shark lovers are sending a loud message to CITES leaders - “Vote ‘Yes’ for sharks and rays!”. You can help spread the word. Download the “Extinction is NOT an Option” sign, take a picture and post it to our Facebook wall of support.

This week, we asked Ania Budziak, Associate Director of Science and Policy and Project AWARE staffer on the front lines of our program work, to answer some top CITES-related questions. She’ll be on the ground pushing for much needed protections for sharks and rays this March

Pete got his drysuit finally in December 2012 and is very happy with the suit, its easy to get in and out of as well as keeping him very toasty as he enjoys pointing out to the other divers out with him!

Dive Site Review

Las Eras

This fantastic shore diving site is suitable for divers open water and above as this site has many levels so you can adjust the depth of the dive to the certification levels of the divers.

We enter the water to the left hand side of the bay and swim out to the edge of the marina wall, at his point we descend into about 6 meters of water, we follow around the marina wall to the left hand side, where you will be able to see large rock formations over hangs and plenty of aquatic life.

I am never disappointed when I visit this site whether I see a Moray, Octopus, Common ray or just Large shoals of fish there are the largest Trumpet fish that live at this site that I have ever had the pleasure to see, its always amazing to see the amount of life.
Living amongst the rocks you are likely to find Anemones, Red Back Cleaner Shrimp, Black and Brown Moray Eels as well as Starfish Cardinal fish and fire worms. An amazing site that is a must see.
